In a recent development, an 18-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the attack on a pro-Palestinian encampment that took place at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) last month. Edan On, identified by CNN through extensive video analysis and interviews, was apprehended by the UCLA Police Department on Thursday.
On stands accused of assault with a deadly weapon and has been booked on a felony charge. He is currently being held on $30,000 bail, as per records obtained from UCLA Police and jail records. The arrest of On comes after an investigation by UCLA Police, which involved interviewing victims, witnesses, and reviewing security camera footage, as well as publicly available videos.
According to the UCLA Police Department, On was spotted on video at the UCLA campus on April 30 brandishing a wooden pole and assaulting encampment occupants. Disturbing footage shows him striking a pro-Palestinian protester with the pole, continuing to do so even when the protester was down, while fellow counterprotesters joined in. The incident has raised concerns about violence associated with protest or counter-protest activities during the specified period between April 25 and May 2, 2024.
CNN has been working to identify an attorney for On, who is expected to face legal proceedings. Meanwhile, his mother, initially proud of his participation in the violence, has deleted her social media post boasting about his involvement in the event.
When confronted with a video showing her son's attack on the protester, On's mother defended his actions, stating that he was merely defending himself. However, she later contradicted herself by claiming that On had not even been present at UCLA on that particular night.
Beverly Hills High School, where On is identified as a senior student, has refrained from confirming or denying his enrollment due to privacy concerns. The school expressed the expectation that students participating in their graduation ceremony uphold the highest standards of behavior, hinting at potential consequences for On's involvement in the incident.
As the investigation progresses, the UCLA Police Department remains committed to identifying other individuals involved in violent acts associated with protests or counter-protests during the specified period.
