A tragic incident unfolded on Monday night as a stolen vehicle driven by a 15-year-old boy crashed and burst into flames on a freeway in Long Beach, California. The teenager, whose identity remains undisclosed, succumbed to his injuries, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).

The CHP reported that the incident occurred around 10:30 p.m., when the young driver was operating a 2020 Kia. Allegedly attempting to pass a Freightliner semi-truck, the teenager was driving north on the 710 Freeway, south of Anaheim Street. The Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) was pursuing the Kia at the time, although the LBPD denied any involvement in a pursuit or attempted traffic stop.

Investigations conducted by the CHP indicate that the teenager was attempting to exit the freeway but miscalculated, leading the stolen vehicle to come directly in front of the Freightliner. The collision between the two vehicles caused the Kia to catch fire, resulting in devastating consequences.

The 15-year-old driver sustained severe injuries and was immediately rushed to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. Tragically, he was pronounced dead at the hospital. The three passengers in the stolen vehicle, a 14-year-old boy and two girls aged 13 and 15, suffered moderate injuries and were transported to nearby trauma centers for treatment.

Authorities have stated that it is unclear whether the use of alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash. The CHP has initiated an investigation to determine the exact cause of the incident.

After the crash, traffic on the freeway was temporarily disrupted, but the 710 Freeway was fully reopened approximately three hours later.
