**Deadline Approaching for Cash App Users to Claim Compensation from $15 Million Settlement**
Cash App customers in New York affected by unauthorized access to their accounts have less than two weeks to file for compensation under a multi-million dollar settlement. The mobile payment service is compelled to pay $15 million following a class action lawsuit initiated in February. The lawsuit alleged that the company "failed to implement appropriate controls to prevent unauthorized access to and use of Cash App and Cash App Investing accounts" and "mishandled and failed to adequately resolve customer complaints regarding unauthorized or fraudulent transactions."
The lawsuit specifically pointed to a significant breach in December 2021, which led to the unauthorized release of personally identifiable information for 8.2 million current and former Cash App Investing customers. Further accusations involve another breach in 2023. Allegedly in 2022, a former employee accessed account data without authorization, and in 2023, an unauthorized user exploited recycled phone numbers to access certain accounts.
As part of the settlement, Cash App has agreed to enhance its data security measures, though the company denies any liability or wrongdoing related to the claims. Impacted Cash App users have until November 18, 2024, to submit a completed claim form.
Eligibility for compensation includes current and former users whose accounts or personal information was accessed without permission or who experienced unauthorized transactions between August 23, 2018, and August 20, 2024. Affected users may claim compensation for out-of-pocket losses up to $2,500, lost time valued at $25 per hour for up to three hours, and documented transaction losses with appropriate supporting documentation.
