In an unfortunate incident in upstate New York, a 13-year-old was fatally shot by a police officer after fleeing with a realistic appearing firearm. The incident occurred on Friday night in Utica, a city located approximately 240 miles northwest of Manhattan.

According to Utica Police Chief Mark Williams, the shooting took place after officers stopped two youths around 10:00 p.m. One of the individuals attempted to escape on foot and allegedly pointed what appeared to be a handgun at the officers. During a news conference held at Utica City Hall, Chief Williams stated that an officer fired a single shot at the teen during a ground struggle, hitting him in the chest.

Immediate first aid was provided by the officers, and the teen was rushed to Wynn Hospital. Tragically, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. Police have recovered a replica of a GLOCK 17 Gen 5 handgun with a detachable magazine at the scene, which, although appearing realistic, only fires pellets or BB's.

During a statement, Kathleen Davis, the interim superintendent of the Utica City School District, expressed profound sadness over the tragic and senseless loss, extending condolences to the victim's family. Davis also offered support to law enforcement partners, acknowledging their tireless efforts to maintain neighborhood safety.

Chief Williams declined to disclose details about the cause of the initial stop or the events leading up to the shooting, citing an ongoing investigation. In the following days, the department plans to release a comprehensive report on the incident, accompanied by the full body camera footage captured by the involved officers.

Mayor Michael Galime assured transparency in the investigation. He pledged to meet privately with the teen's family and other community members to address concerns. Galime emphasized the importance of understanding every aspect of the incident, stating that all information will be released to the public.

The Office of the New York State Attorney General will lead the investigation to determine if the shooting was justified. The police department will also conduct an internal investigation to assess whether officers adhered to protocols and training. As per standard protocol, the officers involved will be placed on administrative leave with pay.

Although a video of the incident has circulated on social media, Chief Williams cautioned that it does not fully represent the entirety of the incident. He expressed his condolences to the family of the deceased and acknowledged the tragic and traumatic nature of the event for all parties involved.

As the community grapples with this tragic loss, the Utica City officials strive to provide transparency and ensure that justice is served.
