Nebraska investigators have reported that an unidentified individual, who drove the wrong way on Nebraska's Interstate 80 to avoid a traffic stop, was shot and killed by law enforcement west of Lincoln on Monday afternoon.
According to the Seward Nebraska County Sheriff's office, the incident occurred around 3:11 p.m. on Monday when a deputy attempted to stop a passenger vehicle on westbound I-80. However, the driver refused to comply with the signal and instead turned around, heading east in the westbound lanes.
After a pursuit spanning approximately 7 miles, the driver finally came to a halt at mile marker 383 west of Lincoln. At this point, a passenger in the vehicle exited, but despite law enforcement commands, the driver refused to cooperate.
Authorities from the sheriff's office reported that deputies observed a weapon in the driver's hand, leading to an officer-involved shooting. Troopers and deputies immediately provided first-aid assistance, but unfortunately, the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
As of Tuesday, no further information has been released regarding the identity of the individual or the reasons behind the shooting. It is also unclear whether the incident was recorded by body and cruiser cameras.
In response to the investigation and evidence collection, westbound Interstate 80 was temporarily closed for several hours on Monday night, causing traffic disruptions in the area.
The Seward County Sheriff's Office, along with other law enforcement agencies, will continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident to determine the events leading up to the fatal shooting. Further updates and findings are expected to be disclosed as the investigation progresses.
