In a recent statement, the Worcester Police Department has issued a warning to residents who own Hyundai and Kia cars regarding a surge in automobile thefts. These thefts are believed to be linked to the infamous "TikTok Kia challenge," exploiting a security vulnerability present in certain Hyundai and Kia models.

According to the statement released on Friday, it has been reported that since November 1, 2023, a total of 24 Hyundai vehicles and 12 Kia vehicles have been stolen within the city of Worcester. Shockingly, these incidents account for a staggering 25% of all motor vehicle thefts in the area during this period.

Upon further investigation, it was discovered that the Hyundai Elantra model appears to be the primary target for these car thefts, as it constitutes approximately 34% of the stolen vehicles. The Worcester Police Department has emphasized that these thefts are not isolated incidents and have taken place throughout various parts of the city. However, there are two identified hot spots: initially concentrated in the area encompassing Chandler and Austin streets, and more recently, in the downtown area centered around Front and Commercial streets. The parking garages at 145 Front St., 201 Commercial St., and the Worcester Public Library at 3 Salem Square have specifically been highlighted as areas of concern.

Considering the seriousness of the situation, the Worcester Police Department is urging Hyundai and Kia owners within the city to take immediate precautionary measures. They are advised to contact their local dealership and inquire about the possibility of updating their vehicle's software or acquiring a retrofit kit to address the security vulnerability identified in their models.

With the alarming rise in car thefts and the targeted focus on Hyundai and Kia vehicles, it is crucial for owners to stay vigilant and take proactive steps to protect their valuable assets. The Worcester Police Department is actively investigating these incidents while working closely with the affected automotive manufacturers to alleviate the security concerns raised by this vulnerable software exploit.

In the interest of public safety and to curb the escalating car thefts, the police department is seeking the cooperation of the Worcester community in reporting any suspicious activities witnessed in and around the identified hot spots or related to the thefts of Hyundai and Kia vehicles. By staying alert and adopting precautionary measures, Worcester residents can contribute to the collective effort in combating this worrisome trend and ensure the safety of their vehicles.

As the investigation unfolds, Hyundai and Kia owners in Worcester are strongly encouraged to remain updated on the latest information shared by the Worcester Police Department, as well as to seek guidance from their respective dealerships to safeguard their vehicles from potential theft.
