An "active search" effort was called off on Thursday for Amanda Richmond, a woman who disappeared under the ice of a frozen river near Anchorage while trying to save her dog. The incident occurred last weekend when Richmond, 45, and her husband, Brian Rogers, were walking along the North Fork Eagle River Trail. Alaska State Troopers released a statement on Monday providing details of the tragic event.

According to the statement, one of their dogs went into the water, prompting both Richmond and Rogers to enter in an attempt to rescue it. While Rogers emerged unharmed, Richmond went under and did not resurface. Austin McDaniel, the Alaska State Troopers communication director, stated that Richmond was last seen by her husband before she disappeared. Despite extensive search efforts, the dog has also not been found.

Over the course of four days, Alaska State Troopers, along with a search and rescue team, search dogs, and the Anchorage Police Department, conducted an intensive search for Richmond. The rescue efforts involved the use of drones, helicopters, divers, and sonar technology. However, troopers announced in a statement on Thursday that there are no further accessible areas of interest to search at this time.

The troopers stated that if new information or evidence is received by law enforcement, it will be reviewed, and a determination on additional search efforts will be made. Richmond has been entered as a missing person in the police system, and her relatives have been notified.

In a statement provided by Jennifer Richmond, Amanda's sister, Rogers described his wife as an emergency room nurse who was trained to help and save people. In this instance, she displayed the same determination to rescue their dog. Rogers emphasized that their dogs were considered family members, and the majority of photos on Richmond's phone were of their beloved pets. He referred to Richmond as a hero who died trying to save a family member, stating, "To me and our 4 boys, she died a hero."

The loss of Amanda Richmond is a tragic reminder of the risks associated with icy water rescues and the unwavering love that pet owners have for their animal companions. Despite the unfortunate outcome, her courageous act will forever be remembered by her family and loved ones.
