As winter settles in, residents of Western Washington are eagerly awaiting the arrival of snowfall. However, uncertainty looms as forecast models present a range of possibilities for the upcoming days.

On Wednesday morning, light snow was observed in the South Sound region, but it quickly melted away. While heavy pockets with isolated slushy accumulation are still possible, areas such as King and Snohomish counties may experience wet snow showers, primarily in elevated regions. These showers are expected to recede by late morning as temperatures rise above freezing in the afternoon.

Attention now turns to Thursday when a push of cold air could potentially bring light snow or flurries as it moves south. However, the atmosphere is forecasted to be relatively dry, limiting the potential for significant lowland snowfall. Nevertheless, there is still a chance of some snow and wet snow showers early Thursday, particularly in a possible convergence zone over the North Sound and North Interior. Outside of this area, overall snowfall is not expected to be significant.

Forecast models diverge on Friday's outlook, causing further uncertainty. There is a possibility of major lowland snow developing as an area of low pressure moves ashore Friday night into Saturday morning. The exact location of this low-pressure area is crucial, with some models suggesting it will track farther south over Oregon, resulting in snow mainly impacting the southern portion of Western Washington. However, the U.S.-based GFS forecast model predicts a farther north track, potentially causing a major winter storm with the addition of ice storm conditions.

Meteorologists anticipate a convergence of forecast models as they better resolve the evolving features over the Pacific Ocean, leading to a clearer understanding of the upcoming weather patterns. In the meantime, residents are advised to prepare for potential winter weather impacts on Friday and Saturday.

Looking ahead, the forecast suggests a gradual warming trend with drier conditions, although morning temperatures are expected to remain below freezing into next week.

As the situation develops and forecast details become clearer, updated information will be provided to keep residents informed and prepared for any winter weather changes.
