The first major winter storm of the new year has left parts of the Northeast covered in a foot of snow, causing hazardous road conditions and flight cancellations. As this storm system moves offshore, another one is gearing up to bring extreme weather across the country.
According to forecasts, the Northeast is expected to receive between 6 and 12 inches of snow, with Unionville, New York, already reporting over a foot of snowfall. However, New York City remains in a snow drought, with only 0.2 inches recorded in Central Park. Lingering snow showers are expected throughout the day, potentially causing localized heavy snow in some areas.
The heavy snowfall has disrupted travel plans, with over 700 flights canceled nationwide, according to FlightAware. Additionally, the storm could impact NFL games scheduled for Sunday, including the matchup between the New York Jets and the New England Patriots at Gillette Stadium, where there is a chance of snow accumulation during the game.
As the storm moves out into the Atlantic on Sunday night, snow plow crews will have the opportunity to clear the roads before the Monday morning commute.
Meanwhile, a second storm system is already making its way across the country. It has brought heavy rain and mountain snow to the Northwest and is forecasted to move across the Rocky Mountains before strengthening over the southern Plains.
By Monday morning, Texas will experience heavy downpours as the storm draws moisture from the Gulf of Mexico, leading to a risk of severe thunderstorms and flash flooding in the South. Louisiana and Mississippi are expected to face the worst effects of the storm on Monday, including damaging winds and scattered tornadoes.
The severe weather threat will continue on Tuesday, with powerful thunderstorms expected to roll across the Southeast, affecting states like Georgia, Florida, and the Carolinas. The Midwest to Florida will also experience the impact of this system.
In the Northeast, heavy rain, gusty winds, and flash flooding will persist into Tuesday night. There is concern that the rain could mix with the remaining snow on the ground, increasing the risk of flash floods.
As both storm systems continue to move across the country, it is crucial for residents to stay updated on weather alerts and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
