A winter storm is expected to hit parts of the Central Plains and Upper Midwest regions on Monday, bringing heavy snowfall and likely disrupting travel in those areas. Meanwhile, other parts of the country are preparing for an unusually warm Christmas day, with temperatures soaring above average.

According to the latest update from the National Weather Service (NWS), the snowstorm will provide a white Christmas to the affected regions. However, areas east of the Mississippi River can expect milder temperatures, with readings rising above 50 degrees Fahrenheit around the Great Lakes region. In New England, the daily average temperatures will be in the 40s, while parts further south will reach above 60 degrees Fahrenheit – a significant deviation of 10-15 degrees above normal for this time of year.

Despite the prospect of a warmer holiday season elsewhere, travel disruptions loom large as FlightAware reports a total of 132 flight cancellations across the United States on Christmas morning. An additional 710 flights are experiencing delays, the repercussions of a domino effect caused by over 350 canceled flights and more than 3700 delays on Sunday due to dense fog in Chicago and its surrounding areas.

This winter weather event has prompted airlines to exercise caution and prioritize passenger safety. Travelers are advised to check with their respective airlines for any updates or changes to their flight itineraries.

The combination of heavy snowfall and travel disruptions serves as a reminder of the impact that weather systems can have on daily life, particularly during the holiday season. As people across the country prepare to celebrate Christmas, it is important to stay informed and take necessary precautions to ensure a safe and enjoyable holiday experience.

As the year draws to a close, it is worth noting that 2021 has been declared the warmest on record. While some regions may experience unusually mild temperatures, others are grappling with the intensity of winter storms. The contrasting weather patterns highlight the ongoing challenges posed by climate change and the importance of adapting to and mitigating its effects.

As the winter storm approaches, individuals and communities in the affected regions are urged to stay updated with local weather advisories and follow any safety instructions issued by authorities. Though snowy landscapes make for a picturesque holiday scene, it is essential to prioritize safety and preparedness during this season of joy and celebration.
