As the coldest night of the winter approaches with plummeting temperatures into the teens on Tuesday night, the aftermath of the recent snowfall poses a risk to road safety. With three to five inches of snow on the ground, untreated wet and slushy roads are poised to freeze solid, leading to potentially hazardous conditions.

Due to this impending freeze, widespread school delays and some closures are expected on Wednesday. School systems in the larger counties north and west of the Beltway may likely experience a second consecutive snow day, while a delay is more probable for school systems inside the Beltway and to the south and east. Students and teachers are advised to be prepared for either scenario and to stay updated on any official announcements.

Additionally, the federal government's operating procedures may also see alterations. Although most federal workers were granted the day off on Tuesday by the Office of Personnel Management (OPM), it is likely that they will be back at their desks on Wednesday. However, there is a good chance that federal employees will have the option of unscheduled leave or telework, and a delayed opening is not ruled out.

With freezing temperatures impeding the melting of the snow, many neighborhood roads are still in messy conditions. Road crews typically require 36 to 48 hours to clear more remote areas, based on past storm patterns. As a result, it is crucial for drivers to exercise caution and stay updated on road conditions before heading out.

In light of the uncertainty surrounding snow days and potential delays, it is advisable for everyone to stay informed and plan accordingly given the variability of the situation throughout the region. This article will be continuously updated with any actual closings and delays as they are reported.

Stay safe and keep an eye out for additional announcements regarding school closures, delays, and potential changes to federal government operations.
