Virginia State Police Investigate Officer-Involved Shooting in Clifton Forge

According to Sgt. Garletts, the incident took place around 9:37 p.m. near the Family Dollar-Dollar Tree store, located in close proximity to the Clifton Forge Police Department.
Authorities have reported that a 24-year-old man armed with a knife attempted to carry out an unprovoked "ambush-style attack" on an officer who was exiting the rear of the building. In response to the imminent threat, the officer discharged their weapon, firing multiple shots that struck the assailant.
The injured man was immediately transported by air to Roanoke Memorial with life-threatening injuries. As of now, there is no update on his condition, and his identity has not been revealed.
The officer involved in the incident escaped unharmed and is currently on paid administrative leave, according to Sergeant Garletts. The name of the officer has not been disclosed. Virginia State Police will disclose the suspect's identity once warrants are issued and served.
In this case, the officer was wearing a body camera during the confrontation. However, officials have stated that the footage captured by the camera will not be released to the public at this time due to the ongoing investigation.
Virginia State Police have taken charge of the investigation and will lead the process. Upon its completion, all findings and evidence will be turned over to the Alleghany County Commonwealth Attorney's Office for further adjudication.
