In a TikTok video that has gained significant attention, self-identified "Fat Solo Traveller" Kimberly Garris has praised Southwest Airlines for their inclusive policy for plus-size passengers. The video details how Garris made use of the policy and has sparked both support and backlash from viewers.

Garris can be seen in the video speaking to a Southwest Airlines agent at the departure gate, requesting to use the "customer of size" policy. This policy allows plus-size passengers to pre-board and receive a free extra seat at no additional cost, even on fully booked flights. Garris emphasizes in onscreen text that Southwest is the only airline with this type of policy and believes it should be adopted as the industry norm.

In the caption of her video, Garris mentions that she also requests a seatbelt extender upon entering the aircraft. Once seated in a window seat, she places the second ticket she received on the seat next to hers, letting others know that it is occupied. She notes that she rarely gets approached because people prefer not to sit in the middle seat next to a plus-size individual.

Garris also highlights other details from the Southwest website regarding the policy, stating that it must be utilized at the departing gate during the start of the journey. Failure to use it for the outgoing flight means it cannot be used for the return journey.

While Garris and many others praise Southwest for their inclusive approach and providing dignity to plus-size passengers, some critics argue that the policy glamorizes obesity. Others have expressed their concerns on social media, pointing out that Southwest does not have a similar policy for accommodating taller customers or those requiring extra space for medical equipment at no additional cost.

One person on social media questioned if the policy would apply to taller individuals seeking extra legroom. In response, Southwest Airlines stated that this policy specifically caters to a small percentage of their customers, addressing those who require additional space. They claim that there is no evidence to suggest that the policy inconveniences other passengers.

Garris, in a separate TikTok video, addressed the backlash and defended Southwest Airlines, highlighting that it is their decision to implement this policy and that individuals have the choice to fly with the airline or not.

Southwest Airlines' "customer of size" policy continues to generate discussions, with contrasting opinions on its fairness and implications. As the debate continues, it remains to be seen if other airlines will consider implementing similar policies to ensure inclusivity and comfort for all travelers.
