Vice President Kamala Harris made history on Tuesday as she cast her 32nd tie-breaking vote, setting a new record for the number of votes cast by a vice president. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer expressed his appreciation for the Vice President's leadership, emphasizing that her tie-breaking votes were instrumental in passing key legislation and confirming judges.

The vote on Tuesday was to break the tie on a judicial nomination, highlighting the significance of Harris' role in shaping the federal judiciary. Before taking office, Harris had expressed hope that her tie-breaking authority would not be necessary, emphasizing the importance of finding common ground in the Senate.

"I join all of my colleagues on both sides of the aisle thanking the Vice President for her leadership, and for making the work of the Senate possible," Schumer said. "Without her tie-breaking votes, there would be no American Rescue Plan, no Inflation Reduction Act, and we would not have confirmed many of the excellent judges now presiding on the bench."

Schumer also honored Harris with a "Golden Gavel" in a brief ceremony held in the Senate Reception Room. The "Golden Gavel" is bestowed for various reasons, and in this case, symbolizes Harris' dedication and commitment to fulfilling her constitutional duty.

The Senate Historical Office explained that the "Golden Gavel" has been previously given for achievements such as senators presiding over the chamber for more than 100 hours during any session. It was also presented to Chief Justice William Rehnquist following the end of the Clinton impeachment trial in 1999, and Chief Justice John Robert after the conclusion of the Trump impeachment trial in 2020.
