In a recent development, court documents obtained by 10 News revealed shocking findings from a search conducted at the Natural Bridge Zoo. The search, prompted by two undercover informants, shed light on concerning matters involving animal welfare and management practices at the zoo.
According to affidavits and search warrants, the investigation was initiated based on information provided by two individuals. One informant was identified as an employee of the zoo, while the other had served as an animal control officer for eight years in the Commonwealth.
The court documents detailed the undercover employee's meticulous documentation of daily tasks, observations, and conversations with other zoo employees and management. It included a troubling conversation between the employee and the elephant handler, where the employee claimed to have been instructed to use a bullhook on the elephants, specifically targeting sensitive areas where "Bone is close to flesh. Make it count."
The affidavits also revealed that two visits were made to the zoo by a police sergeant accompanying the undercover employee. During the first visit in October, numerous animal enclosures were found to be unclean, and some areas were reportedly not functioning properly. Most shockingly, a dead goat was discovered, which had gone unnoticed by employees for over an hour.
Despite the initial findings, the police sergeant made a second visit in November and observed that many of the reported issues had not been addressed. The cumulative evidence, including statements, observations, photographs, and videos, led investigators to conclude that there was a direct and immediate threat to the health and safety of the animals residing at Natural Bridge Zoo.
In response to these grave concerns, authorities commenced a thorough search of the zoo property, which began on Wednesday and concluded yesterday. The details of the search, as well as the actions taken by officials, were not provided in the available information.
The Natural Bridge Zoo has faced criticism and scrutiny in the past regarding its treatment of animals. These recent revelations have only intensified the calls for improved regulations and oversight in the care of animals in captivity.
As the investigation continues, it remains to be seen what consequences may befall the zoo and its employees. Animal welfare advocates and concerned citizens eagerly await further updates on the outcome of the search and potential repercussions for those responsible for the alleged mistreatment and neglect of animals at the Natural Bridge Zoo.
