HINSDALE, N.H. - The quiet town of Hinsdale, New Hampshire, was left astonished after the passing of Geoffrey Holt, the unassuming caretaker of a local mobile home park, who bequeathed his entire fortune of $3.8 million to benefit the community. Holt lived a simple and humble life, often seen in worn-out clothes, riding his lawn mower or reading a newspaper along the main road.
Residents of Hinsdale were unaware of Holt's hidden wealth until his will was disclosed earlier this year. The instructions were concise but impactful: the entire sum should be used to enhance education, health, recreation, and culture within the town.
Steve Diorio, chairperson of the town selectboard, expressed his surprise, stating, "I don't think anyone had any idea that he was that successful. To leave it to the town where he lived... It's a tremendous gift."
The sizable donation has the potential to make a significant difference in Hinsdale, a picturesque town nestled between Vermont and Massachusetts, known for its abundant outdoor opportunities, such as hiking and fishing. The town boasts historical landmarks, including the oldest functioning post office in the nation, dating back to 1816, and the 1759 house of Ebenezer Hinsdale, after whom the town was named.
Since local officials were notified of the bequest, no formal discussions have taken place regarding the allocation of the funds. However, residents have begun suggesting various community improvement projects, such as upgrading the town hall clock, purchasing a new ballot counting machine, or even establishing an online drivers' education course.
Kathryn Lynch, the town administrator, assured the community that Holt's gift would be utilized frugally, mirroring his own financial habits. Lynch expressed her gratitude and noted, "Hinsdale will utilize the money left very frugally, as Mr. Holt did."
Holt's best friend, Edwin "Smokey" Smith, who also served as the executor of Holt's estate, was aware of his friend's fortune and their shared love for collecting model cars, train sets, and history books. Smith recalled that Holt's investments had exceeded expectations in recent years, prompting Holt to seek advice on what to do with the growing wealth. It was Smith who suggested that Holt remember the town they both cherished.
"I was sort of dumbfounded when I found out that all of it went to the town," Smith said, reflecting on Holt's generosity.
Holt's sister, Alison Holt, shared insights into their upbringing, emphasizing their father's emphasis on saving and investing. Growing up with dyslexia, Geoffrey felt a need to prove himself, and amassing wealth became his way of competing and fulfilling his father's expectations.
"He always told me that his main goal in life was to make sure that nobody noticed anything," Alison revealed, further underscoring Holt's unassuming nature.
Geoffrey Holt, who passed away at the age of 82 in June, never sought attention or luxury. He found solace in simple pleasures, like mowing lawns and connecting with the outdoors. Despite facing mobility issues following a stroke a few years ago, Holt remained dedicated to his duties as caretaker and his connection with the residents of the mobile home park.
Ann Diorio, a member of the local planning board, believes that Holt's extraordinary bequest will shed light on the often-overlooked town, stating, "So maybe this will put it on the map a little bit."
As the town of Hinsdale prepares to utilize Geoffrey Holt's generous donation, his legacy of humility and community will live on. The funds will undoubtedly provide a lasting impact on the education, health, recreation, and culture of this tight-knit New Hampshire community.
