In a recent address to the nation, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky made a strong statement, asserting that it is "not the right time for elections" as his five-year term nears its end, according to a report from The Hill. Zelensky emphasized the need for unity and defense against the ongoing threat posed by Russia, which invaded Ukraine in February 2022.

Speaking in a video message on Monday, Zelensky underscored that Ukraine should prioritize fending off Russia rather than engaging in politically divisive activities. "And finally, the waves of any politically divisive things must stop," he asserted. "We must realize that now is the time of defense, the time of the battle that determines the fate of the state and people, not the time of manipulations, which only Russia expects from Ukraine. I believe that now is not the right time for elections."

Ukraine currently has suspended elections due to martial law. Although Zelensky had not previously ruled out the possibility of holding a presidential contest next year, he made it clear that the focus should remain on defending the country against external threats.

Zelensky suggested that existing state structures are capable of addressing political disputes and providing all necessary answers to society, aiming to eliminate conflicts and thwart any attempts to destabilize Ukraine. His plea for unity comes as the presidential elections, scheduled to be held every five years, are set to occur next March.

The stance of Zelensky's wife, Olena Zelenska, regarding his potential reelection remains uncertain. In September, she expressed her uncertainty regarding whether he would run for a second term in 2024, highlighting the significance of the country's ability to organize a free and fair election. "It will also depend whether our society would need him as a president," she stated. "If he will feel that Ukrainian society will no longer wish him to be the president, he will probably not run. But I will support him whatever decision he takes."

As Ukraine faces one of its most critical periods with the ongoing conflict against Russia, Zelensky's call to suspend elections and focus on defense resonates with the nation. The outcome of this statement remains to be seen, as the Ukrainian people await further developments in their country's path forward.
