In a significant development for Ukrainian intelligence, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has successfully dismantled a spy network operated by Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB). The operation led to the detention of five Ukrainian intelligence officers, both current and former, who were found to be spying for the FSB.

According to a press release from the SBU, the detained individuals were involved in transferring sensitive information about Ukrainian forces and energy facilities to Russia. They were all working under the guidance of an FSB curator based in occupied Crimea.

Among the arrested individuals were former officials from the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense and the Foreign Intelligence Service of Ukraine, as well as an employee of the regional SBU department. Disturbingly, it was revealed that the HUR agent leaked personal data of Ukrainian soldiers, while the SBU employee compromised information on fortifications along Odesa's Black Sea coastline.

The SBU also disclosed that the FSB had recruited the SZRU agent before the large-scale invasion by Russia, with the agent's primary task being to collect intelligence on Ukrainian military installations. After the invasion, the agent's focus shifted to identifying foreign weapons shipments within Ukraine. Interestingly, this agent delivered the obtained information to Russia by utilizing an accomplice disguised as a volunteer, who personally reported to Russian intelligence rather than using electronic communication channels.

Moreover, the detained agent also shared details about the operational and security systems of the Rivne and Khmelnytsky nuclear power plants located in western Ukraine, raising concerns about potential vulnerabilities.

During the recruitment process, the FSB reportedly resorted to threats against the agents' families. However, it was revealed by the SBU that the agents also received monetary compensation from Russia for the completion of each assigned task.

These five agents have been charged with treason and are currently in custody, marking a significant blow to Russia's intelligence operations within Ukraine. The SBU's successful neutralization of this espionage network highlights Ukraine's ongoing efforts to counter hostile acts from its eastern neighbor.

The SBU's swift action serves as a reminder of the continued importance of robust intelligence and counter-intelligence capabilities to safeguard Ukraine's national security in the face of external threats.
