In a distressing development, UK MP Layla Moran has revealed that her relatives, along with hundreds of other civilians, are currently trapped inside a Catholic Church in Gaza City, as Israeli forces continue their operations nearby. Moran expressed grave concern about the dire conditions her family members are facing, stating that they are "days away from dying" without access to essential supplies such as food and water.

According to reports from the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, tragedy has already struck within the Holy Family Church complex. It is reported that on Saturday, sniper fire claimed the lives of a mother, named Nahida, and her daughter Samar, as they were walking to a building known as the Sister's Convent within the church compound. The patriarchate's statement revealed that one woman was killed while attempting to save the other. Additionally, seven people were shot and injured as they tried to protect others inside the church compound.

The Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem has vehemently condemned the incident, stating that no warning was given and the victims were shot "in cold blood" in an area where there were no belligerents. Moreover, earlier on Saturday, an Israeli tank fired upon part of the church compound, causing a fire that destroyed the building's generator. This generator was the sole source of electricity, and the loss has left some disabled individuals without access to essential medical equipment like respirators.

Moran's extended family, which includes a grandmother, her son, his wife, and their 11-year-old twins, sought refuge inside the church after their home was bombed during the early days of the conflict. Along with dozens of others, they have been residing on mattresses in various rooms within the Holy Family Church for over 60 days now. The family has been able to communicate sporadically through WhatsApp messages and calls, but they are struggling with intermittent power and no internet access.

Tragically, one member of the family—a grandfather—died last month after being unable to receive medical treatment due to the challenging circumstances. Now, the remaining five members are deprived of food and water, as the last functioning generator, which was pumping water, has stopped working. The situation has further worsened as Israeli soldiers recently entered the church compound and took control of a room in one of the buildings.

This is not the first time the family has faced danger within the church compound. Earlier in the week, they heard gunshots and discovered bullet casings in the area. Two men were also killed on Tuesday while coming and going from the building—an innocent bin collector and a janitor. The family managed to capture a harrowing image of two decaying bodies lying outside the church building, but its authenticity has yet to be verified.

Ms. Moran expressed frustration and despair over the lack of explanation as to why the church has become a target for Israeli soldiers. She emphasized that no warnings or leaflets were sent to the people seeking shelter there, making it seem as though the principle of protecting civilians has been disregarded.

Israel has maintained that its military operations in Gaza are aimed at "eradicating" Hamas and rescuing hostages held by the group. While Israel did advise people in northern Gaza to relocate to the southern part of the region for their safety, the bombing of southern Gaza has made it perilous for those who heeded the warning. Despite a temporary ceasefire between Israel and Hamas to facilitate a hostage and prisoner exchange, a substantial number of Palestinians, including Moran's family, have remained in Gaza City and other northern areas.

Efforts are underway to secure the safe evacuation of Moran's relatives, but the situation is incredibly complex. The possibility of traveling to Rafah near the Egyptian border has been considered, but the lack of a ceasefire renders such a journey extremely dangerous.

The ongoing conflict in Gaza, which began when Hamas breached Israel's heavily guarded perimeter on October 7th, has exacted a heavy toll. According to the health ministry in Gaza, over 18,700 people have been killed, and 50,000 have been injured since the start of the Gaza war. Tragically, three hostages were mistakenly killed on Friday by Israeli troops in an area of intense fighting.

As the international community continues to witness the escalating human cost of the conflict, urgent efforts are needed to ensure the safety and protection of civilians in Gaza. The plight of Layla Moran's relatives highlights the urgent need for a collective commitment to a peaceful resolution and the safeguarding of innocent lives.
