Cleveland, Ohio - Two suspects are now in custody following a shooting incident that took place in the vicinity of Public Square on Saturday night, leaving two teenagers injured. The incident occurred approximately one hour after the conclusion of the annual WinterLand tree lighting ceremony, as authorities responded to a fight among juveniles in the area.

According to a statement from Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb issued on Sunday, both teenage victims, aged 13 and 15, were discovered by officers on foot patrol around 8:45 p.m. The victims suffered gunshot wounds and were immediately transported for medical treatment.

While one of the suspects is currently in serious condition, the other is reported to be in stable condition. Mayor Bibb expressed his dismay over the incident, emphasizing the need to break the cycle of violence and find alternative ways to resolve conflicts. He reassured Clevelanders that ensuring safety remains a top priority, through initiatives such as RISE and various programs aimed at supporting youth, empowering families, and improving neighborhoods.

Michael Deemer, president and CEO of Downtown Cleveland Inc., also issued a statement on Saturday night, expressing gratitude for the swift response of the Cleveland Division of Police. Deemer highlighted the need to address the issue of excessive firearms and the lack of respect for life and authority within the community. He emphasized that violence has no place in Downtown Cleveland and reiterated the commitment of his organization to working alongside its partners to enhance safety.

Authorities have not provided further information regarding the motive behind the shooting or any additional suspects involved. The investigation into the incident is ongoing, as local law enforcement continues to gather evidence and interview witnesses to shed light on the details surrounding the tragic event.

The Public Square shooting serves as a somber reminder of the importance of community safety and the work that still needs to be done to create an environment where everyone can feel secure. As Clevelanders mourn the senseless violence inflicted on these teenagers, it is hoped that this incident will galvanize efforts to address the root causes of such incidents and build a safer future for all residents.
