In a tragic incident near Nationals Park in Southwest D.C., two individuals have been killed and two others wounded after shots were fired from a vehicle. The shooting occurred on Thursday morning, prompting an intensive search by the police for the believed getaway vehicle.
According to D.C. Police Chief Pamela Smith, the incident took place around 11:45 a.m. near the 1300 block of Half Street, just two blocks away from Nationals Park. The victims, who were standing outside a corner store, were struck by gunfire from a passing vehicle.
At a news conference, Chief Smith provided details about the suspect vehicle that the police are currently seeking. It is described as a white 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee with Maryland license plate 2FD0820. The vehicle stands out with its sunroof, white rims, and tinted windows. Notably, the driver was seen wearing white gloves, adding to the distinguishing features of the vehicle.
The wounded victims, three males and one female, were immediately rushed to the hospital. Their conditions have not been disclosed at this time. The authorities have not released any information regarding the identities of those who were shot.
Investigators have revealed that the vehicle being sought was recently involved in an armed carjacking in the 4th District on Wednesday night. However, it remains unclear how many individuals were inside the vehicle during the shooting. The police have yet to publicly identify any suspects related to the incident.
Chief Smith acknowledged that there have been ongoing conflicts among several groups in the area but noted that there had been no significant violent crimes reported in the vicinity in the past 30 days.
As the investigation continues, Half Street has been closed between N Street and O Street for the purpose of the police operation, causing traffic disruptions in the area.
This tragedy serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in ensuring public safety. The search for the white Jeep Cherokee and apprehension of the individuals responsible for this act of violence remains a top priority for the authorities.
