New York City TSA agents made a startling discovery at LaGuardia Airport when they found 17 bullets "artfully concealed" in a clean, disposable diaper, according to an announcement made by the agency on Wednesday.
The incident unfolded on Wednesday morning when the man's bag triggered an alarm in an X-ray unit at a security checkpoint. TSA officers conducted a thorough search of the bag and were surprised to find a diaper containing 17 9-millimeter bullets wrapped inside.
The individual, a resident of Arkansas whose identity has not been revealed, initially claimed ignorance about the presence of the diaper in his bag. However, he later changed his story, suggesting that his girlfriend might have placed it there. The TSA did not provide any details regarding whether the man possessed a weapon or if he was accompanied by any other individuals.
As a consequence, the Port Authority Police issued a citation to the man for unlawful possession of ammunition. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of adhering to regulations and following proper protocols when traveling.
The TSA regularly encounters unusual and prohibited items during screening procedures at airports across the country. Earlier this year, Salt Lake City International Airport had to temporarily halt operations after a plastic skull, mistaken for an improvised explosive device, was brought to a trade show. It took two hours to confirm that there was no threat.
In January, the TSA released a list of the strangest items confiscated from passengers in 2022. The list included an inert grenade found at Milwaukee's Mitchell International Airport, cattle prods disguised within a guitar case discovered at Dulles International Airport in Virginia, and a hair scrunchie filled with drugs intercepted at Idaho's Boise Airport.
The incident serves as a reminder of the vigilance required in airport security and the ongoing efforts by TSA agents to ensure the safety of travelers. Passengers are urged to carefully inspect their belongings before arriving at the airport and to comply with all regulations to facilitate a smooth and secure travel experience.
