In a recent filing, federal prosecutors have accused former President Donald Trump of attempting to deceive a Florida court and delay his criminal cases "at any cost," according to a report by NBC News. This development sheds light on the interconnection between Trump's multiple criminal cases and their entanglement with the upcoming 2024 election.

Special counsel Jack Smith's office submitted a document to U.S. Judge Aileen Cannon in Florida, notifying her that Trump had requested a pause in the federal election interference case in Washington, D.C. This pause would continue until his motion for presidential immunity is fully addressed.

The request for a pause came shortly after Trump's lawyers argued before Judge Cannon that the Florida case, regarding the handling of classified documents, needed to be delayed due to conflicting schedule demands. One of Trump's attorneys even attended the hearing remotely from New York, where he is involved in a civil fraud trial on behalf of the former president.

Judge Cannon, appointed by Trump in 2020, had previously paused pre-trial litigation related to the use of certain classified materials as she evaluated the former president's request. Additionally, Trump's defense team requested a halt to the trial until after the 2024 presidential election.

However, the special counsel pointed out that Trump's attorneys failed to disclose during the hearing that they intended to file a motion to halt the Washington case as well. Trump's defense team filed a motion overnight seeking to delay "all proceedings" in the Washington trial until the matters of presidential immunity are fully resolved. They argue that his actions surrounding the 2020 election are protected by immunity and have also filed motions to have the case dismissed.

Granting the request to delay the Washington trial could have significant implications, potentially pushing the trial scheduled for early March by months, if not beyond the November election.

Federal prosecutors expressed concern over Trump's alleged tactics in their notice to Judge Cannon, suggesting that his efforts indicate an "overriding interest in delaying both trials at any cost," as stated by counselor to the special counsel, Jay Bratt.

Trump currently faces charges in Florida for mishandling classified defense secrets subsequent to his time in office and in Washington for his involvement in efforts to overturn the 2020 election results. The former president has pleaded not guilty to both indictments.

The implications of these ongoing legal battles and the potential delays may have ramifications for Trump's political aspirations as he currently stands as the front-runner for the Republican nomination in the upcoming 2024 election.
