In a recent incident, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has issued a lookout notice against Trinamool Congress leader Shahjahan Sheikh, who has gone missing since yesterday. A team of the central agency was assaulted by a mob during a raid at Sheikh's residence in West Bengal.
According to sources, Sheikh was present at his home during the raid, but he and his family have been missing ever since the attack on the ED officials. It is alleged that the Trinamool leader attempted to flee to Bangladesh, but tight security on the border by the Border Security Force and Bangladesh Rifles prevented his escape. Bangladesh is currently gearing up for the polls on Sunday.
Authorities believe that Sheikh and his family are still hiding within the state. The ED team went to Sheikh's residence as part of their investigation into a ration distribution scam. Sheikh is considered to be a close aide of state minister Jyotipriyo Mallick, who was arrested last year in connection with the multi-crore scam.
During the mob attack in Sandeshkhali in North 24 Parganas district, three ED officers sustained "grievous" injuries, and their personal belongings, including mobile phones and wallets, were snatched. The officers also reported that upon their arrival, Sheikh's house was found to be locked from inside, with their mobile location indicating that Sheikh was inside the house at the time.
The incident has sparked a political firestorm, with Governor CV Ananda Bose stating that the state is not a "banana republic." The BJP has strongly condemned the attack, characterizing it as a "direct assault on the federal structure." The Congress, an ally of the Trinamool, is demanding the implementation of President's Rule in West Bengal.
Meanwhile, the Trinamool Congress has accused the ED officials of inciting locals, stating that the central agency conducted the raid without informing the police or the state government. The party is questioning whether this is an example of following the norms of the federal structure.
The search for Shahjahan Sheikh continues as authorities intensify efforts to locate him and his family in order to proceed with the investigation into the alleged ration distribution scam.
