The incident was reported on Tuesday night when loved ones reached out for help after speaking with the stranded hiker, identified as Christopher Roma, 37.
According to a report from the New Hampshire Fish and Game Law Enforcement Division, Roma had made contact with NH911, stating that he was stranded between Mount Bond and Mount Guyot and was feeling very cold. The weather forecast for the area had predicted heavy winds, temperatures in the single digits, and snow.
Fish and Game, along with the Pemi Valley Search and Rescue Team and Mountain Rescue Service, immediately launched a dangerous operation to retrieve Roma. However, the treacherous weather conditions that had left him stranded made the rescue efforts extremely challenging.
The rescuers had to navigate through waist-deep snow, and once they reached the exposed tree line, they faced heavy winds and blowing snow, significantly slowing down their progress. Recognizing the difficulty of the situation, a call was made to the New Hampshire Army National Guard to attempt a helicopter extraction of the hiker.
By 5 p.m. on Wednesday, a Mountain Service Rescue team reached Roma's location, but sadly found that he had succumbed to the harsh conditions. The New Hampshire Army National Guard was then called in to carry out a helicopter extraction of the body. Despite battling low clouds and harsh winds, the operation was successfully completed on Thursday morning around 8:30 a.m., as mentioned in the report from the Fish and Game Law Enforcement Division.
The use of the helicopter for the recovery saved the rescue teams from an arduous carry-out process that would have involved 15 Conservation Officers and over 30 volunteers who had responded to the incident.
Authorities noted that Roma was a highly skilled hiker with extensive experience in the area, making the tragic outcome even more poignant.
This unfortunate incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictable and often dangerous nature of mountainous environments, emphasizing the need for adequate preparation and caution when venturing into such areas.
