In a devastating incident that took place on Wednesday afternoon, a young mother tragically lost her life after being struck by a dump truck while crossing Biscayne Boulevard in Miami's Edgewater neighborhood. Identified as 33-year-old Jaklin Sabag, the woman was pinned underneath the truck, while her baby boy, who was in a stroller, was rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital for medical care.
The heartbreaking crash occurred around 1 p.m. at the intersection of Northeast 22nd Street and Biscayne Boulevard. According to the Miami Police Department, the woman, along with her baby and another pedestrian, attempted to cross in front of stopped traffic, outside the designated crosswalk. Unfortunately, the truck driver, unable to see the pedestrians in front of him, moved forward and accidentally rolled over Jaklin Sabag, narrowly missing the stroller.
Witnesses reported that another pedestrian quickly came to the rescue and saved the 8-month-old boy from the crushed stroller. The baby, described as "alert and crying" by a Miami Police Department spokesperson, was immediately transported to the hospital for evaluation and medical treatment.
Images captured from Sky 10 showed the crushed stroller lying on the road beside the dump truck, further highlighting the tragic nature of the accident. The authorities closed off a section of Biscayne Boulevard to conduct an investigation, which led to its reopening later in the afternoon.
While it appears that the truck driver will not face charges, police stated that surveillance footage supported his account of the accident. This stretch of Biscayne Boulevard in Edgewater has been identified as one of the most dangerous areas for pedestrians in the city. As a result, law enforcement is conducting an ongoing enforcement campaign aimed at addressing the issue, targeting both drivers who fail to yield and pedestrians who cross outside of designated crosswalks.
The community has been left deeply saddened by this heartbreaking incident, with concerns growing about pedestrian safety in the neighborhood. Authorities are urging both drivers and pedestrians to remain vigilant and adhere to traffic regulations in order to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
The loss of Jaklin Sabag is a stark reminder of the importance of road safety and the need for improved pedestrian infrastructure in busy urban areas like Miami. As investigations continue, efforts to prioritize the well-being of all road users must intensify to prevent such devastating incidents from occurring again.
