In a devastating incident, a 9-year-old boy from Florida lost his life after crawling underneath a moving school bus on Tuesday, as reported by the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP).

According to the FHP crash report obtained by WESH, the tragic incident occurred shortly after the bus driver dropped off the young boy at the Waterford East Apartment homes on Wharf Lane in Orange County, around 4 p.m. Unexpectedly, the boy ran back towards the bus, crawling underneath it while it was still in motion.

The bus driver, unaware of the boy's actions, inadvertently ran over him, as reported by WOFL. The boy's aunt expressed that her nephew had gone under the bus in pursuit of a football, highlighting his passion for the sport. Shockingly, the boy was the sole student on the bus at the time of the accident.

Kenia Joachim, a mother whose own child was best friends with the victim, spoke to WESH and expressed her grief over the devastating loss.

In an effort to understand the circumstances leading to the tragedy, troopers are reviewing video footage from both the bus and a nearby clubhouse.

The 54-year-old bus driver, who had over a decade of experience, was interviewed by the FHP.

The young victim was a student at Lawton Chiles Elementary School, according to Orange County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Maria Vazquez. Dr. Vazquez expressed her deep sadness and extended her thoughts and prayers to the family and school community affected by this heartbreaking incident. OCPS will provide support through available counselors for any students or staff members dealing with the news.

While the FHP investigation continues, the Lawton Chiles Elementary School community is left grieving the sudden loss of one of their own. The tragedy serves as a somber reminder of the fragility of life, as the entire community comes together to mourn the loss of a promising young individual.
