Chennai, India - As torrential rain and the approaching Cyclone Michaung wreak havoc on southern India, at least four casualties have been reported, factories shut down, and a major airport has been forced to suspend operations. According to the country's weather office, Cyclone Michaung is set to hit the coast of Andhra Pradesh with sustained winds of 90-100 kph (56-62 mph), gusting up to 110 kph. Tamil Nadu has already experienced the tragic consequences of the extreme weather, with four reported deaths, including two people killed when a building wall collapsed. Authorities are urging residents to remain cautious and take necessary precautions.

Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu, a significant electronics and manufacturing hub, has been severely affected by the heavy rains, leading to flooded streets and submerged vehicles. Chennai's airport, one of India's busiest, has ceased operations until Tuesday morning due to safety concerns.

The impact of the adverse weather conditions is not limited to the local population. Major technology manufacturers, including Taiwan's Foxconn and Pegatron, have halted Apple iPhone production at their facilities near Chennai, as the heavy rains have made operations difficult.

The disaster management departments of both Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh are on high alert, undertaking mass evacuations of residents living in coastal areas. Thousands of people have already been moved to safer locations, and warnings have been issued to fishermen to avoid venturing out to sea.

Schools, colleges, offices, and banks in at least four districts, including Chennai, have been closed until Tuesday due to the severe weather conditions. Power outages have also been reported, further adding to the challenges faced by the affected population.

The weather office has forecasted that parts of Andhra Pradesh could receive more than 200 mm (8 inches) of rain within the next 24 hours. In preparation, authorities have evacuated nearly 7,000 people from eight coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh, and an additional 28,000 may be evacuated depending on the path and intensity of the cyclone.

"In light of the potential impact of Cyclone Michaung, the safety and well-being of our citizens is of utmost importance," stated a senior official from the disaster management department of Andhra Pradesh. "We are working diligently to ensure that adequate measures are in place to minimize the impact and protect lives."
