The hikers, identified as Sirin O'Connor, 63, and Somjak Weerapit, 50, from Quincy, Massachusetts, and Phromthep Khankaew, 37, from Thailand, lacked warm clothing and lights to navigate the mountain, according to a statement by New Hampshire Fish and Game.

The rescue operation was initiated after Monadnock State Park staff contacted Fish and Game shortly before 5 p.m. on Friday, alerting them to three lost hikers near the mountain's summit in Jaffrey, N.H. Recognizing the urgency, rescue crews quickly responded, guiding the hikers back to the trail and below the tree line, using the minutes of remaining daylight. However, the hikers were unable to continue as they didn't have lights.

The harsh weather conditions worsened with windchills dropping to -10 degrees, putting the hikers' safety at risk. Thanks to the combined efforts of Monadnock Park Staff, Upper Valley Wilderness Response Team, and New Hampshire Conservation Officers, the three hikers were successfully rescued, preventing a potential tragedy.

During the descent, the hikers were provided with gear by the rescue team to aid them. However, O'Connor's condition deteriorated due to her lack of warm clothing and exposure to extreme cold. In order to ensure her safety, rescuers made the decision to carry her down the remaining 1.3 miles.

At approximately 8:30 p.m., the other two hikers reached the trailhead with the assistance of the rescue crews. O'Connor, on the other hand, arrived at the trailhead at 9:48 p.m. after being carried down by the rescuers. She was subsequently transferred to Monadnock Community Hospital in Peterborough, N.H., by ambulance for treatment.

This incident serves as a reminder for outdoor enthusiasts to always check the weather and adequately prepare for current conditions before embarking on any hiking adventure. Being equipped with warm clothing, lights, and necessary supplies can make a significant difference in ensuring a safe and enjoyable outdoor experience.
