Texas Governor Greg Abbott has escalated his protest against President Joe Biden's border policies by chartering a flight to transport migrants from Texas to Chicago. This move comes after Chicago began impounding buses carrying migrants, citing new ordinances regarding permits and designated drop-off spots. The flight, which arrived in Chicago on Tuesday night, carried approximately 100 people who had given their consent before departure.
According to Abbott's office, this is the first time the governor has organized a plane to relocate migrants, after having already bused over 75,500 migrants to six cities in the past year. However, officials in these cities have raised concerns about the uncoordinated and unexpected arrival of buses, which often lead to migrants being dropped off at random locations. This practice has divided Democrats, with some urging the Biden administration to take more decisive action.
Chicago, in particular, is facing the repercussions of the migrant influx, struggling to find sufficient space to provide housing, food, and medical attention to those in need. As a result, some migrants have resorted to sleeping in police stations and airports while waiting for available shelter space. The situation took a tragic turn recently when a 5-year-old child staying in a temporary shelter passed away, raising further questions about the conditions within these facilities.
Despite the challenges faced by receiving cities, Abbott's office has emphasized that they will continue transporting migrants, even during winter. The governor launched the border bus mission in April 2022 to support overwhelmed border communities in Texas, shifting the responsibility onto the Biden administration for leaving thousands of migrants in their towns. Abbott's spokesperson, Andrew Mahaleris, stated that until President Biden takes action to secure the border, Texas will persist in assisting their local partners in responding to what they deem a crisis caused by the administration's policies.
The White House has responded to Abbott's latest move with strong criticism, accusing him of disregarding and dehumanizing migrants. White House spokesperson Angelo Fernández Hernández condemned Abbott's actions, stating that he utilizes extreme policies that demonize and exploit people for political gain. The statement also highlighted Abbott's placement of razor wire, potentially endangering Border Patrol officers, and his promotion of laws that could make communities in Texas less safe.
As the political clashes over migrant care intensify, the situation in Chicago serves as a poignant example of the challenges faced by cities overwhelmed by the influx of migrants. With tensions rising, it remains to be seen how the Biden administration will address these concerns and find a solution to the ongoing crisis at the border.
