In a show of defiance against the Biden administration's immigration policies, Texas Governor Greg Abbott has continued to install razor wire along the border of a migrant-engulfed city. This comes despite a recent US Supreme Court ruling that granted federal agents access to the area.

On Wednesday, Governor Abbott boldly stated that Texas' razor wire serves as an effective deterrent against the illegal border crossings that he believes are being encouraged by the Biden administration's "open border policies." He emphasized that the state will persist in deploying this measure to repel illegal immigration.

Earlier this month, Texas officials cordoned off Shelby Park in Eagle Pass and stationed state National Guard units to block unauthorized entry, even deterring Border Patrol agents who hadn't received prior approval. Abbott argued that the area had been used as a gathering place for migrants crossing the nearby Rio Grande river into the United States. By denying access, he claimed that it discouraged illegal entries into Eagle Pass, Texas.

However, the Department of Homeland Security has been fighting to regain access to this stretch of the border, stating that their personnel are unable to reach migrants in need of emergency care. In a recent 5-4 decision, the Supreme Court ruled that US Border Patrol agents may cut through the concertina wire if necessary to access the area.

Despite the ruling, Governor Abbott has doubled down on his stance, erecting additional razor wire in the area, as captured in footage by NewsNation correspondent Jorge Ventura. Ventura noted that he hadn't observed any attempts by the Border Patrol to cut through the fencing. Furthermore, Ventura shared footage showing migrants who had successfully crossed the Rio Grande but were unable to proceed into Texas due to the barrier.

Governor Abbott has been engaged in a prolonged battle with the Biden administration over what he perceives as lax enforcement of immigration laws. He argues that federal inaction allows illegal immigration to surge and overwhelm border towns in Texas. Earlier this month, the Justice Department threatened to sue Texas if it enacted a law allowing state authorities to arrest and prosecute illegal immigrants starting in March. Additionally, the Department of Justice has filed a lawsuit against the state regarding its construction of a floating barrier in the Rio Grande.

In an attempt to share the burden of accommodating illegal migrants, Governor Abbott has bused nearly 100,000 individuals to sanctuary cities such as New York and Chicago. However, considering the vast number of people entering the US legally and illegally in search of a better life, these efforts only scratch the surface.

While the Customs and Border Protection officials have yet to release the number of migrant encounters at the border in December, sources indicate that total crossings will likely set a new record. As the immigration debate continues to embroil the nation, the clash between Texas and the federal government shows no signs of abating anytime soon.
