A 17-year-old girl from Pittsfield is facing multiple charges, including operating under the influence of liquor, after she crashed her Nissan Altima into the Massachusetts State Police barracks in Cheshire. The incident occurred on Saturday evening, when the sedan veered off Route 8 and struck the east front corner of the building.
According to state police, the car crashed through the brick exterior wall of the barracks, causing damage to a kitchen area inside. Fortunately, no troopers inside the building were injured in the incident.
Both the driver and one passenger, also a 17-year-old girl from Pittsfield, were transported to Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield to be evaluated for minor injuries. Following her examination, the driver was brought back to the Cheshire State Police Barracks, where she was booked on charges of operating under the influence of liquor, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, speeding, and a marked lanes violation.
The 17-year-old driver, whose name was not released, was released on a standard $40 bail fee by a bail clerk. She is expected to appear in Pittsfield District Court for arraignment on Tuesday. The Massachusetts State Police Facilities Section and a contractor quickly responded to the scene and carried out emergency repairs to the damaged barracks. While additional repairs will be needed, officials affirmed that troopers are still able to carry out their duties within the building.
This incident serves as a reminder of the dangers of driving under the influence and the potential consequences that come with it. Law enforcement agencies continue to work diligently to enforce road safety and prevent accidents caused by impaired driving.
