In a shocking turn of events, two teenage murder suspects managed to escape from the East Baton Rouge Juvenile Detention Center in Louisiana over the weekend. The escapees, identified as 17-year-olds David Atkins and Willie Jackson, were being held on first-degree murder charges.
This is not the first time Atkins has made a daring escape from the facility. Less than two weeks ago, he and another teen successfully eluded guards who were preoccupied with quelling a brawl among several prisoners on November 14th. However, their freedom was short-lived as they were apprehended just over 24 hours later when authorities received a tip revealing their hiding place in a nearby residence.
Baton Rouge police, who have been actively involved in the pursuit of the fugitives, have warned the public to consider Atkins and Jackson armed and dangerous. They emphasize that approaching them should be avoided at all costs.
The East Baton Rouge Juvenile Detention Center has garnered a spotty reputation in recent years due to similar instances of inmates escaping. In 2021, a group of five inmates escaped after overpowering a staff member, locking her in a cell without a radio after stealing her keys. This marked the second jailbreak of the year. Additionally, in February of last year, eight teenage inmates broke free from their cells, resulting in a violent altercation that left three of them injured and caused significant damage to the facility's doors and windows.
In response to this latest incident, both the Baton Rouge police and the US Marshals Service have intensified their efforts to locate and apprehend the escaped teens. The investigation is ongoing as law enforcement agencies work tirelessly to ensure the safety of the community.
As the search continues, the public is urged to remain vigilant and report any information that may help in capturing Atkins and Jackson.
