A 15-year-old alleged gunman, accused of shooting a tourist in the leg and firing at an NYPD officer, was arrested in Yonkers, according to multiple law enforcement officials. The arrest was made by a U.S. Marshals regional task force on Friday afternoon.
Law enforcement sources revealed that the teenager was apprehended without incident at a house on Saratoga Avenue, near the Bronx border. The NYPD had offered a reward of $13,500 for information leading to the suspect's arrest, specifically for the "attempted murder of an NYC police officer."
The alleged shooter, who hails from Venezuela and arrived in New York City less than six months ago, had been residing in a shelter on the Upper West Side. Detectives are currently investigating whether he is also linked to two other crimes, including an armed robbery in the Bronx on January 27th and a shots-fired incident near a Midtown park.
According to law enforcement sources, the suspect may have had a potential family connection in Yonkers, although the investigation on this matter is still ongoing. When the suspect was arrested, his mother was reportedly present and he was visibly emotional.
NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban emphasized that those who target police officers will be pursued and brought to justice. The arrest came as a result of extensive investigation, involving interviews with hundreds of individuals, collection of video evidence, and "pristine" photos of the suspects.
Due to the suspect's age, it is yet to be determined whether he will be taken to criminal court or family court, according to a senior police official.
The incident at Times Square occurred on Thursday evening when the suspect and an accomplice entered the JD Sports sporting goods store on Broadway. After shoving clothes into a shopping bag, a loss prevention officer approached them for a receipt. When they failed to provide one, the suspect wearing all white pulled out a .45-caliber handgun and fired, narrowly missing the security officer. However, a Brazilian tourist, identified as 37-year-old Tatiele Ribeiro Lemos, was struck in the leg above the knee and was taken to Bellevue Hospital for treatment. Thankfully, her injuries were not life-threatening.
Following the shooting, the two perpetrators fled the scene and were later spotted by officers at 47th Street and Seventh Avenue. One of the individuals was apprehended immediately, while the other fled towards Sixth Avenue. Midway down the block, the second suspect fired a shot at the pursuing officer and continued to flee, firing another shot under his arm. Thankfully, no officers were injured, and due to the crowded area, police restrained from returning fire. The suspect managed to elude capture by running into the Rockefeller Center subway station before leaving the premises.
As investigation of the incident continues, authorities are urging anyone with additional information to come forward. The streets of midtown were temporarily closed, causing traffic disruptions, but have since reopened. Tatiele Ribeiro Lemos, the gunshot victim, is currently recovering in a New York City hotel after receiving 13 stitches.
This incident serves as a reminder of the dangers faced by police officers and innocent bystanders, highlighting the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to ensure public safety in the midst of such incidents.
