Philadelphia police are on the lookout for a suspect caught on video spray-painting a swastika at the Horwitz-Wasserman Holocaust Memorial Plaza on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. The incident, deemed a hate crime by the memorial, has sparked outrage in the community and authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward.

The vandalism took place around 1:30 a.m. on Sunday, with the suspect quickly drawing a green swastika on the memorial site using spray paint. The Horwitz-Wasserman Holocaust Memorial Plaza, which has stood as a symbol of remembrance since its construction in 1964, is the oldest Holocaust memorial in the United States.

Eszter Kutas, the director of the Holocaust Remembrance Foundation, expressed deep concern over the incident. "This disgusting act of antisemitism is very upsetting to us," Kutas said in an interview with WPVI-TV. The memorial's statement on Facebook also highlighted the incident's occurrence amidst a troubling surge of anti-Jewish hatred across Philadelphia and the country.

The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) Philadelphia Regional Director, Andrew Goretsky, condemned the act and called for unity against hatred. "This reprehensible act not only desecrates a symbol of remembrance for the victims of the Holocaust but also highlights the disturbing rise in antisemitism plaguing our community," Goretsky stated on the social media platform X.

Police responded to the scene after receiving notification at around 2:21 p.m. on Sunday. Authorities are now investigating the incident as a hate crime and are appealing to the public for any information that could help identify and locate the suspect responsible for defacing the memorial.

Community members and organizations have expressed their support for the memorial and their determination to combat bigotry. The rising incidents of antisemitism have become a concerning issue, prompting efforts to promote tolerance and eradicate hatred.

As the investigation continues, authorities are urging anyone with relevant information to contact the authorities. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of unity and vigilance in the face of rising prejudices.
