A suspect involved in the fatal stabbing of a passenger on a Metro light-rail train in South Los Angeles has turned himself in to the authorities, leading to his arrest.
The Los Angeles Police Department announced that 19-year-old Carlos Carrillo-Martinez surrendered to the police at the 77th Area station at midnight on Wednesday. Following an interview with detectives, he was booked on suspicion of murder, according to a news release issued on Thursday.
The tragic incident unfolded earlier this week when 27-year-old Jalil Sosa Illera was stabbed multiple times on an E Line train near Los Angeles Trade-Technical College. The stabbing occurred as a result of a confrontation between Illera and the suspect, as reported by the LAPD.
Despite being wounded, Illera managed to make it back home and promptly called 911. He was then rushed to a hospital by firefighter-paramedics, but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries. Illera's sister described him as a creative individual who owned his own clothing brand called ILL ERA, according to Eyewitness News.
Following the stabbing, investigators shared photos and video footage of the suspect, who was later identified as Carrillo-Martinez. The video showed him waiting on a Metro platform. Upon his surrender, Carrillo-Martinez admitted to being the individual depicted in the released images and was subsequently interviewed by detectives.
The LAPD statement revealed that Carrillo-Martinez's bail has been set at $2 million. While the number of murders on the Metro system has seen an increase compared to previous years, they remain infrequent. In the 12 months between October 2022 and September 2023, six murders have been reported.
Authorities are urging anyone with any information about the stabbing to contact LAPD Central Bureau Homicide Detectives John Meneses or Justin Howarth at (213) 996-4144. Those who prefer to remain anonymous can reach out to Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS.
As the investigation continues, this tragic incident serves as a reminder of the importance of safety on public transportation systems, prompting authorities to address concerns and ensure passenger security on Metro trains in and around Los Angeles.
