A 27-year-old man from Queens, identified as Jermain Rigueur, has been taken into custody in connection with a series of random stabbing incidents that occurred in the Queens borough of New York City. The suspect was apprehended on Wednesday evening, following four assaults that took place over the past two days.
According to the New York City Police Department, Rigueur has been charged with three counts of attempted murder, four counts of assault, one count of attempted assault, and four counts of criminal possession of a weapon. The arrest came after an extensive investigation, during which detectives followed leads and conducted door-to-door inquiries.
The breakthrough in the case occurred when police identified a distinctive lanyard worn by the assailant during some of the attacks. The lanyard contained an ID card indicating that Rigueur was an employee of Woodhull Hospital. This vital clue led investigators to Rigueur's residence in the Springfield Gardens neighborhood, where he was apprehended wearing the same clothing, sneakers, backpack, and lanyard that were captured on surveillance footage during the multiple stabbing incidents.
The random attacks targeted unconnected victims, none of whom suffered life-threatening injuries. The first stabbing happened shortly after midnight on Tuesday when a 34-year-old woman was approached from behind by the assailant, who stabbed her in the side. The victim was transported to the hospital in stable condition. Three additional stabbings occurred on Wednesday morning within an hour of each other, during which a 74-year-old man, a 41-year-old man, and a 36-year-old man were attacked. All three victims were also transported to the hospital for treatment.
In an unrelated incident, a stabbing took place on a subway train in Brooklyn on Wednesday morning. A 28-year-old man was stabbed in the chest by a perpetrator who fit the description of the attacker in the Queens stabbings. The victim was taken to the hospital in stable condition.
Authorities are still investigating the motive behind the stabbing spree, as it remains unclear at this time. However, police did mention that the bus incident on Wednesday appeared to be the only attack that may have been provoked.
Jermain Rigueur, who has no prior arrest history, had recently moved to Queens from Suffolk County. As of now, it is unclear if he has legal representation. Police are waiting for a search warrant to examine the contents of Rigueur's backpack, in which he allegedly claimed to have the weapon used in the attacks.
The investigation into the stabbing spree is ongoing, and authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward.
