One person has been arrested after ramming their vehicle into a Nebraska state trooper's cruiser during a high-speed pursuit on Monday, authorities have confirmed. The incident occurred around 12:40 p.m. when a trooper spotted a Ford Fusion traveling at over 100 mph on Interstate 80 in Lincoln, near mile marker 403. The trooper attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but the driver refused to yield and fled westbound, prompting the trooper to initiate a pursuit, as stated by the Nebraska State Patrol.
Authorities reported that during the pursuit, the driver dangerously passed several vehicles on the shoulder while maintaining a speed of more than 100 mph. The vehicle then exited and reentered I-80 at the Milford interchange, mile marker 382, heading eastbound towards Lincoln.
In an effort to aid the pursuit, the state patrol's AirWing took over from the air as the suspect continued to speed through the Lincoln area. Troopers resumed the pursuit after the suspect's vehicle had passed through Lincoln, according to the state patrol.
The situation escalated around 1:15 p.m. when the suspect intentionally rammed their vehicle into a trooper's cruiser near mile marker 422, causing both vehicles to roll. Authorities swiftly took the suspect into custody without further incident. The suspect refused medical treatment at the scene, and charges are currently pending as authorities proceed with the investigation.
The injured trooper was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, officials confirmed.
As a result of the collision and subsequent law enforcement activity, Interstate 80 was temporarily closed in both directions for approximately six miles. The closure, which was in effect at mile marker 422 near Ashland and Greenwood, lasted for around 75 minutes, but the interstate has since reopened.
The Nebraska State Patrol assures the public that there is no longer any danger and that the suspect is in custody. Further details regarding the incident are expected to be released soon.
