In recent weeks, a significant increase in respiratory illnesses has been observed in Ohio, according to doctors from the Cleveland Clinic's network and the Ohio Department of Health. The state's health department has reported a surge in respiratory illness activity, with cases being classified as "very high" shortly after the holiday season.
Dr. Mike Aguilar, a Cleveland Clinic Akron General Family Physician, noted that there has been a noticeable uptick in symptoms such as sniffles, coughs, and colds. He attributed this rise to colder weather, which leads people to spend more time indoors and in closer proximity to each other, facilitating the spread of viruses through coughing and sneezing.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) identifies the period from December through April as the time of year when respiratory infections are most prevalent. Dr. Aguilar confirmed that Akron General has seen an increased number of patients seeking treatment for various illnesses, including COVID-19, RSV, seasonal flu, and strep throat.
In particular, strep throat appears to be highly contagious, especially among younger populations such as school-age children and teenagers. Although strep throat is not individually reported in Ohio, individuals experiencing symptoms such as fever and pain while swallowing are advised to seek medical attention.
The Ohio Department of Health, through its state dashboards, provides disease-specific data for seasonal influenza and COVID-19 at both regional and county levels. In a statement to FOX 8, the department encourages Ohioans to stay updated on vaccines, including the seasonal flu and the recently updated COVID-19 vaccine, for optimal protection against severe diseases. They also emphasize the importance of frequent handwashing and staying home when feeling unwell, in order to prevent the spread of illnesses to others.
Dr. Aguilar further emphasized the critical role of diligent handwashing as one of the most effective preventive measures. He advised anyone who is sick to stay home and seek appropriate medical care.
As Ohio continues to grapple with high levels of respiratory illnesses, health officials urge residents to take necessary precautions and prioritize their health and the health of those around them.
