In a boneheaded move that serves as a cautionary tale, a Subaru WRX driver in New York's Adirondacks attempted a dangerous pass on a snowy road, resulting in a horrifying crash with a snowplow. Miraculously, no injuries were reported.
The incident, captured in footage on January 16, shows the black sport sedan trying to overtake a tractor-trailer on a narrow, unplowed road. However, as the driver attempted the ill-advised maneuver on a blind curve, a snowplow emerged from the opposite direction. The driver's side doors collided with the plow, ripping the car in half.
According to eyewitness Erik Ghirarduzzi, who was present at the scene, it is "a miracle nobody was more seriously injured." Ghirarduzzi emphasized that the driver's last-second fishtail likely saved their life. Photos reveal the rear portion of the WRX completely separated from the rest of the vehicle, requiring it to be loaded onto a flatbed truck.
The crash serves as a stark reminder for motorists to exercise caution during winter storms. The New York State Department of Transportation confirmed that no injuries were reported, but emphasized the importance of refraining from passing on blind curves and maintaining appropriate driving speeds when roads are covered in snow and slush.
As drivers across the Northeast contend with winter weather conditions, it is crucial to prioritize safety and exercise common sense. Avoiding reckless maneuvers and finding locations such as empty parking lots, far from obstructions, can provide a safer environment for those wanting to enjoy the snow.
While the Subaru WRX driver walked away from the incident without harm, this incident underscores the need for responsible driving practices during treacherous weather conditions.
