In a shocking turn of events, the Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) has released an emergency inspection report revealing significant structural damage on the Washington Bridge, leading to its immediate closure. The 26-page report, accompanied by images from Friday, depicts the alarming failure of steel anchor pins that hold major beams in place.

Director Peter Alviti of the RIDOT disclosed that the pins, dating back to the bridge's inception in 1968, were found to be the root cause of the deterioration. He explained, "When these pins reach the end of their useful life, the deterioration can escalate rapidly. That's precisely what happened with this bridge."

Contrary to previous statements made, Alviti clarified that the bridge had undergone an inspection in July, stating that it was in "good condition" with no significant issues identified at that time. However, on Friday, a rank-and-file worker discovered the critical structural problems, prompting intensive inspections over the weekend.

As a result of the findings, Alviti made the decision on Monday to immediately close the westbound side of the bridge. During a briefing on Tuesday, he emphasized, "The fact is, we have averted a major catastrophe here."

However, this decision has unleashed widespread traffic disruptions throughout Greater Providence. It is estimated that it will take approximately two weeks before the eastbound side of the bridge can accommodate two-way traffic. Furthermore, it is expected to be at least three months before the westbound side can be reopened to commuters.

The closure of the Washington Bridge has raised concerns among Rhode Island lawmakers, who are now seeking answers regarding the sudden bridge closure. With the emergency inspection report highlighting the damaged structure and the original planning documents from the 1960s, officials are investigating how this issue went undetected in previous inspections.

RIDOT has stated its commitment to resolving the bridge's structural problems promptly to ensure the safety of commuters. However, the long-term impact on traffic congestion and the inconvenience caused to residents and businesses in the area cannot be overlooked.

The closure of the Washington Bridge serves as a reminder of the critical importance of regular infrastructure inspections and the potential consequences of aging structures. As Rhode Island deals with the aftermath of this emergency, state officials will be under scrutiny to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
