Prosecutors argued that the requests were "far-reaching" and sought unspecified categories of documents from individuals who had not brought any charges in the case.
The filing, which spanned 32 pages, was made by prosecutors from David Weiss' office. They contended that Biden's attorneys had failed to provide evidence that the investigation arose from an improper pressure campaign instigated during the previous administration, violating Biden's constitutional rights. Additionally, the prosecutors stated that there was no indication of any animus or improper motivation from the current Special Counsel or Attorney General in pursuing charges against the President's son.
Biden's legal team had previously requested U.S. District Judge Maryellen Noreika, who is presiding over the case, to subpoena Trump, former Attorney General William Barr, former acting Deputy Attorney General Richard Donoghue, and former acting Attorney General Jeffrey Rosen. They alleged that the investigation against Biden was a result of relentless pressure exerted during Trump's presidency.
The motion for a ruling on the subpoena request is yet to be publicly scheduled, with all pretrial motions set to be due on December 11. Biden's attorney declined to comment on the matter.
It is important to note that a plea deal previously reached between Biden and federal prosecutors fell apart in July after the presiding judge expressed concerns about its terms. Following the breakdown of the deal, Weiss, a Trump appointee, was granted special counsel status and is currently overseeing Biden's indictment on gun charges. Biden has pleaded not guilty to the three-count indictment, which relates to his alleged possession of a firearm while using narcotics.
In addition to the ongoing investigation into his gun charge case, Hunter Biden is facing scrutiny as a target of House Republicans' impeachment inquiry into President Biden. According to a letter obtained by NBC News, Republican chairmen of the House Oversight and Judiciary committees recently accused Biden of seeking "special treatment" by requesting to testify publicly instead of in a private deposition.
As the legal proceedings continue, the attention remains focused on the outcome of the subpoena request and the potential impact it could have on the gun charge case against Hunter Biden.
