Special Counsel David Weiss is set to appear before investigators with the House Judiciary Committee on November 7th to answer questions related to his ongoing investigation into Hunter Biden, according to a source familiar with the matter. The meeting, which will be conducted behind closed doors, comes in the wake of testimony from two IRS whistleblowers who alleged that the criminal investigation was being slowed down under Weiss's leadership and displayed preferential treatment towards the president's son.
Weiss has vehemently denied allegations of favoritism and has maintained that he handled the investigation impartially. Initially, the investigation targeted a plea deal, with Hunter Biden intended to plead guilty to two counts of willful failure to pay taxes. However, the plea deal fell through due to confusion between prosecutors and Biden's attorneys regarding the extent to which he would be shielded from further prosecution.
Considering that the plea deal collapsed, Weiss has indicated the possibility of pursuing additional charges against Hunter Biden. Court filings suggest that these charges might be filed in California or Washington, D.C., where the IRS whistleblowers, Gary Shapley and Joseph Ziegler, claim to have found stronger evidence of tax crimes.
Nevertheless, some details of the whistleblowers' testimony have been disputed by other investigators involved in the Biden case. Matthew Graves, the U.S. attorney for D.C., reportedly informed the House Judiciary Committee investigators that he did not oppose Weiss bringing charges in his jurisdiction. While he did not directly partner in the case, Graves offered assistance from his office if needed.
Thomas Sobocinski, an FBI investigator, also contradicted claims made by Shapley regarding Weiss's control over the investigation. Sobocinski stated that he never heard Weiss say he had been denied special counsel status, indicating that Weiss does indeed have full control over the case. Sobocinski further noted that during a meeting, none of the investigative team expressed concerns about the case being politicized. Rather, they were cautious in their approach to Biden, coordinating with the Secret Service to ensure a smooth and secure investigation process.
The upcoming meeting between Special Counsel David Weiss and the House Judiciary Committee will provide an opportunity for lawmakers to pose questions regarding the ongoing investigation into Hunter Biden. As the investigation progresses, it remains to be seen if additional charges will be brought against Biden and in which jurisdiction they will be filed.
