CAPE TOWN, Nov 21 - South African lawmakers have voted in favor of closing the Israeli embassy in Pretoria and suspending all diplomatic relations with Israel until a ceasefire is reached in the conflict with Palestinian group Hamas. The parliamentary resolution, brought by the opposition Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) party, was passed by a margin of 248-91 on Tuesday.

While the resolution is largely symbolic, as it is the prerogative of President Cyril Ramaphosa's government to implement it, it indicates the strong stance taken by South Africa on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. A spokesperson for the presidency stated that Ramaphosa "notes and appreciates" parliament's guidance on South Africa's diplomatic relations with Israel, particularly concerning the status of the embassy.

Ramaphosa and senior foreign ministry officials have been vocal in their criticism of Israel's leadership during the recent military campaign in Gaza. They have called for an investigation by the International Criminal Court into potential war crimes committed by Israel.

In response to the resolution, the Israeli embassy in Pretoria did not offer immediate comment. However, on Monday, the Israeli ambassador was recalled to Tel Aviv for consultations ahead of the vote.

The EFF's motion, brought in solidarity with the Palestinian people, was prompted by the Israeli bombardment and invasion of Hamas-ruled Gaza following a deadly incursion by Hamas militants into Israel on Oct. 7. The governing African National Congress pledged its support to the motion, aligning with South Africa's long-standing position in support of Palestinian statehood and drawing parallels with the apartheid-era struggle.

Notably, the ANC's Chief Whip, Pemmy Majodina, amended the resolution to include a clause demanding a ceasefire and binding United Nations-facilitated negotiations for a just, sustainable, and lasting peace before the closure of the embassy and the suspension of diplomatic relations.

South Africa's commitment to the Palestinian cause has spanned decades, with the country likening the suffering of Palestinians to that of the Black majority during the apartheid era. Israel, however, vehemently denies this comparison.

Although the closure of the Israeli embassy in Pretoria is contingent upon the government's decision, the adoption of this resolution reflects South Africa's firm position on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and its commitment to seeking a peaceful resolution through international forums.
