In response to severe winter conditions, the city of Lincoln, Nebraska has declared a Snow Emergency and implemented two parking bans, according to city officials. The Snow Emergency, along with the parking bans, aims to facilitate faster and more efficient snow removal operations in residential areas and on key routes.
Under the residential parking ban, parking is strictly prohibited on the even numbered side of residential streets during the year 2024. This measure will aid snowplow crews in clearing neighborhood streets promptly. It is important to note that the ban does not apply to emergency snow routes, arterial streets, bus routes, or snow removal districts.
In addition to the residential parking ban, a snow emergency parking ban is in effect. This means that parking is prohibited on both sides of emergency snow routes, arterial streets, school, and bus routes. Maps detailing these routes can be found on lincoln.ne.gov/snow under the "Parking Bans & Ordinances" tab. Motorists are urged to make alternative parking arrangements to provide sufficient room for snow clearance operations.
Winter operations crews are currently working tirelessly to plow emergency snow routes, arterial streets, and residential areas. However, authorities have warned that the task is challenging due to ongoing snowfall, resulting in snow-covered and snow-packed roads. The situation is further exacerbated by the presence of drifting and blowing snow, which will persist until the winds subside.
Residents are advised to exercise caution and adhere to safety precautions, as a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 6 p.m. The warning forecasts the possibility of additional snowfall of up to one inch. Furthermore, a Wind Chill Warning has been issued until 12 p.m. on Tuesday, with wind chills potentially reaching as low as 45 degrees below zero.
Public transportation, including bus services, is expected to operate normally despite potential minor delays of five to ten minutes due to weather conditions. Passengers are encouraged to download the RideLNK app to access real-time updates on bus locations and schedules.
Additionally, residents residing along bus routes are urged to promptly clear their sidewalks to ensure safe and convenient access to and from bus stops. This collaborative effort will not only facilitate smooth transit operations but also prevent potential delays.
Meanwhile, the Nebraska State Patrol has reported that numerous roadways in eastern Nebraska remain closed or impassable due to hazardous conditions. Despite the efforts of snowplows, blowing snow has created new drifts, further complicating travel in the region.
As the winter storm continues its impact on Nebraska, residents are urged to stay informed, exercise caution on the roads, and take necessary measures to ensure their safety during this severe weather event.
