In a surprising turn of events, a small commuter airplane was forced to make an emergency landing on the Loudoun County Parkway near Dulles International Airport on January 19, 2024.
According to the Virginia State Police, the incident occurred around 12:50 p.m. when the single-engine Cessna 208 Caravan skidded into a guardrail. Thankfully, no vehicles were struck and there were no reported injuries.
The aircraft, operated by Southern Airways Express, had just taken off from Dulles International Airport before the emergency landing took place. Onboard were a total of seven individuals, including the 27-year-old pilot, a co-pilot, and five passengers. The passengers consisted of four adults and a 15-year-old boy.
Eyewitness Jesse Labell recounted the scene, describing how he witnessed the plane landing just 30 feet ahead of him on the Loudoun County Parkway. As soon as the aircraft came to a stop, Labell rushed to assist the passengers, who though shaken, appeared to be in good health.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will initiate an investigation into the incident to determine the cause of the emergency landing.
The landing led to a significant emergency response, prompting the closure of the southbound lanes of the parkway between Yardley Ridge Drive and Arcola Mills Drive, as stated by the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office.
Despite the unexpected event, Dulles Airport continued its normal operations, allowing for both takeoffs and landings.
As this story unfolds, it serves as a reminder of the importance of emergency preparedness for both pilots and passengers alike, and highlights the actions taken by first responders to ensure the safety of all involved.
