In a harrowing incident on Sunday morning, six individuals waiting in line outside a popular California restaurant were injured when an SUV engaged in a street takeover crashed into the crowd, according to the New York Post. The incident took place at a busy intersection in Santa Clarita, located north of Los Angeles.
Terrifying video footage captured the moment a white Honda CR-V executed a wide turn at the intersection and careened into the unsuspecting crowd outside the Black and Blue Restaurant, as reported by KTLA. Despite the valiant attempts by many in the crowd to dodge the oncoming vehicle, six people were struck before the SUV came to a stop, colliding with a wall on the restaurant's patio. Fortunately, the resulting damage was minor.
The driver of the white SUV, dragging its front bumper, hastily reversed and fled the scene while bystanders and security personnel rushed to aid the injured individuals. Thankfully, first responders were able to attend to the six wounded victims at the scene, as their injuries were determined to be minor.
Law enforcement officers arrived at the restaurant and fortuitously discovered the car's front license plate, which had dislodged during the collision. This crucial piece of evidence enabled them to swiftly identify the driver and subsequently arrest two women on Magic Mountain Parkway. The identities of the arrested individuals have not been disclosed at this time.
Following a field sobriety test, both women were taken into custody on charges of driving under the influence (DUI). It is possible that additional charges may be pressed as the investigation progresses, law enforcement officials revealed.
Eyewitnesses present at the scene recounted that the driver appeared to be engaging in a street takeover, a dangerous form of stunt driving where individuals attempt to shut down intersections to perform daring vehicular maneuvers. "The driver decided to do some donuts in a white-looking SUV," one witness told CBS news. "She did one turnover around where it pretty much wasn't too successful. I guess she did another and that one actually made impact. It luckily did not hit too many people but a lot of people were getting knocked down," the witness added.
Street takeovers, colloquially known as "sideshows," have emerged as a growing concern in major cities across the United States in recent years. These events involve aspiring stunt drivers executing perilous tricks with their vehicles on public roads. While such incidents gained popularity during the pandemic when fewer drivers were on the roads, these takeovers continue to persist, notably in Los Angeles. Local authorities have been diligently monitoring and addressing these occurrences.
According to data from the Los Angeles Police Department, there were 7,654 reported street takeovers in 2021 and approximately 4,899 in 2022. Statistics for 2023 have not yet been released.
As investigations into this alarming incident in Santa Clarita continue, officials and law enforcement agencies are working towards curbing the dangerous trend of street takeovers and ensuring public safety on the roads.
