CONCORD, N.H. - Tragedy struck the New Hampshire Hospital in Concord on Friday as a shooting incident unfolded, resulting in multiple victims and a deceased shooter. The shooting took place in the hospital's front lobby, as confirmed by law enforcement officials.
According to an anonymous law enforcement official who spoke to The Associated Press, one person was shot in the lobby apart from the shooter. The investigation is ongoing, and the official was not authorized to disclose further details publicly.
Governor Chris Sununu released a statement, stating, "While the scene remains active as the campus is cleared, the suspect is deceased. The state immediately mobilized, and first responders and law enforcement are on the scene. We will provide as many details as possible as this situation unfolds."
State police issued an alert via social media, acknowledging the existence of multiple victims. However, they did not specify the number or confirm any casualties.
New Hampshire Hospital, the sole state-run psychiatric facility for adults in the state, is located in Concord, near several state agencies, Concord High School, and a district courthouse. The hospital, situated on a large sprawling campus spanning over a hundred acres, has approximately 185 beds.
During a press conference held late Friday, representatives from the police department assured the public that the shooting had been contained to the front lobby, and all patients were safe.
This incident marks yet another violent act at a U.S. hospital, underscoring the ongoing challenges faced by medical centers in adapting to growing threats. The healthcare industry is increasingly recognizing the need for heightened security measures in light of such events.
