Severe storms and potential snowfall may disrupt Thanksgiving travel for millions of Americans, according to officials. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued warnings regarding two major storm systems that are expected to impact the nation, bringing rain, thunderstorms, and winter weather.
In a post on X (formerly known as Twitter), the NWS Prediction Center advised individuals to remain weather aware and check local forecasts on weather.gov before embarking on holiday travel. The anticipated weather conditions include heavy rain and strong thunderstorms extending from the Lower Mississippi Valley to the Mid-Atlantic region.
The NWS also highlighted the possibility of a "wintry mix" in New England and the interior Northeast on Tuesday and Wednesday, with heavy snowfall projected in higher elevations within New Hampshire and Maine.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) responded to the NWS warning, cautioning that severe storms could affect flights in parts of the South and East Coast. Travelers were advised to check their flight status with their respective airlines. The FAA provided a tracker link to assist passengers in monitoring potential disruptions.
These weather forecasts come amidst record-breaking Thanksgiving travel predictions. AAA estimates that a staggering 55.4 million Americans will travel a minimum of 50 miles between Wednesday and the Sunday following Thanksgiving. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) anticipates screening 2.6 million passengers on Tuesday and 2.7 million passengers on Wednesday. Sunday could witness even larger crowds, with the TSA projecting 2.9 million passengers, possibly surpassing the previous record set in June.
In response to the forecasted conditions, New York City has issued a travel advisory for Tuesday through Wednesday. The city anticipates wet and windy weather, urging residents and visitors to take precautions. Mayor Eric Adams (D) emphasized the need to bundle up and wear extra layers when venturing outside.
With Thanksgiving just around the corner, travelers are advised to stay informed about the weather conditions impacting their journeys. Preparing for potential disruptions and staying connected to official weather updates will help ensure a safer and more enjoyable holiday travel experience.
