In a recent interview on NBC News's "Meet The Press," Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) expressed his belief that the impeachment narrative surrounding President Biden is "falling apart." Graham argued that if there was a definitive "smoking gun" in the House's impeachment inquiry, it would have been the focus of clear discussions.
Graham stated, "If there were a smoking gun, I think we'd be talking about it." He further highlighted that the narrative presented by Hunter Biden, regarding Joe Biden's alleged lack of knowledge about the family's business dealings, was also crumbling. Despite these claims, Graham emphasized that he is currently more concerned about the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and not worried about impeaching the president at this time.
The senator acknowledged that he has not been closely following the House's investigation into Biden and his family's foreign business interests. He mentioned that the burden of proof rests on the House to demonstrate that President Biden financially benefited from Hunter Biden's enterprises.
Last week, the House formalized its impeachment inquiry against President Biden with a 221-212 vote, along party lines, approving a resolution authorizing the investigation. This vote followed months of investigations led by House GOP members into allegations that Biden improperly benefited from his family's business ventures.
Allegations include Biden using his position to benefit the foreign business dealings of his son, Hunter Biden, who is currently facing charges of evading taxes on foreign business earnings. House Republicans are also examining accusations that the Department of Justice intentionally delayed a tax crimes probe into Hunter Biden.
Former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) had previously asserted that the GOP investigations into Biden would fall under the umbrella of impeachment. However, a formal vote was only taken last week.
The vote coincided with Hunter Biden's brief appearance at the Capitol, where he publicly criticized House Republicans instead of complying with a scheduled deposition under a subpoena from the GOP. Hunter Biden expressed his willingness to testify but insisted on doing so in a public setting, while Republicans sought a closed-door deposition.
Meanwhile, the White House continues to denounce the impeachment inquiry, dismissing it as a "political stunt."
As the impeachment inquiry into President Biden progresses, it remains to be seen how the narrative will evolve and whether additional evidence will emerge to support or discredit the allegations against him.
